Productive and reproductive parameters of Large White sows with two artificial insemination techniques: cervical and post-cervical

Keywords: Cervical artificial insemination, post cervical artificial insemination, productive and reproductive parameters, sows, Large White

Abstract

This study aimed to compare traditional artificial insemination with post cervical artificial insemination in terms of the productive and reproductive parameters of Large White sows. This study was conducted on a commercial pig farm in Trujillo, Peru. Eight hundred sows were randomly assigned to two treatment groups. A completely randomized design was used, and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS vs 27 software, with a Student’s t-test for two independent samples, with a significance level of 5%. Highly significant statistical differences (P<0.01) were calculated for the total number of piglets born (15.1 ± 3.9 vs. 16.1 ± 3.5), number of piglets born alive (13.7 ± 3.8 vs. 14.7 ± 3.2), number of piglets weaned (12.5 ± 3.7 vs. 13.8 ± 2.9), and litter weight at birth (17.4 ± 5.2 vs. 19.7 ± 4. g). On the other hand, no significant statistical differences were reported (P>0.05) in the number of stillborn piglets (1.1 ± 1.5 vs. 1.1 ± 1.6), number of mummified piglets (0.29 ± 0.6 v 0.33 ± 0.6), weaning-estrus period (6.7 ± 8.1 vs. 5.9 ± 6.7), fertility percentage (95 vs. 96%), and farrowing percentage (90 v 91%). It was concluded that the post cervical insemination technique improves productive parameters, does not affect reproductive characteristics in Large White sows.
