The theory of social configurations by the thinkers Norbert Elias and Eric Dunning, in sports tourism

Abstract

From a sociological perspective, sports tourism is much more than an athletic practice; it represents a symbolic framework in which bodily experiences reflect complex social structures. This phenomenon enables individuals to seek excitement, belonging, and recognition through sport, transforming the body into a vehicle for social communication. Using a documentary and hermeneutic method, the objective of the research is to analyze the phenomenon of sports tourism from the theory of social configurations developed by Norbert Elias and Eric Dunning, in order to understand the interdependent dynamics between leisure, sport, and civilization, as well as the sociocultural meanings that emerge in the contemporary practices and experiences of the actors linked to this type of tourism. The conclusions show that this form of tourism provides a space where self-control, bodily ethics, and legitimate forms of excitement are debated and updated, all within relational contexts that promote institutional discipline, enjoyment, and adventure. Thus, the customs and norms associated with this practice reflect a contemporary tendency to normalize moderation and self-control and revalue the social role of sport and leisure in each experience.
